I Let God Down...
“I let God down.” I’ve heard this, and even said this myself, before from people all around me. “Why would God forgive me? I let Him down.” STOP THIS NOW.
I think this is completely wrong. When we say this we are basically saying that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross wasn’t enough and that I have to do something for my own salvation to work. That God’s love is somehow conditional on how good or bad we are.
Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, would deny Jesus three times. If anyone would have felt unworthy of God’s love it would have been Peter. In John 21 Jesus comes back and reinstates Peter to do His work:
“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”” (John 21:15-19, NIV)
What can we learn from Peter here? He failed like we all do. Peter, who spent around three years with Jesus, goes and says he doesn’t even know Jesus. He denies even knowing the man that he just followed and hung on every word of for years.
See we don’t hold God up, so we can’t let Him down. God holds us up in his hand. We never can let God down, because we were never holding Him up. And God…God will never let you down. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He is our foundation which won’t be shaken.
So next time you think that you let God down, remember that you were never holding Him up. He holds us up with His power and greatness.
