With summer break coming up and school being out, you may take a vacation or work a summer job. But there is one thing that will happen: you will spend more time with friends than you would in school. So who are your friends that you are going to hang out with all summer? King David in the Bible said this about who you hang out with.
“Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night." –Psalms 1:1-2
Who are you walking with? Who are you spending time with on a regular basis? If your friends don’t reflect God then you will soon reflect who they are. David even says don’t walk, stand, or sit with people who are going to corrupt you. This may mean that you can’t hang out with a certain ‘cool’ group or may even need to stop hanging out with certain people.
This doesn’t mean that we stop telling them about God or loving them, but this is a fine line that you not become like them.
David here says, “Blessed is the one…whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who mediates on his law day and night.” It says delight in the law, not to feel burdened by or controlled by, but be happy and enjoy in the law. David also tell us to mediate on it day and night. This means that we know it so well that we even have God’s law memorized and live by it.
So this summer, take a look at who you are hanging out with and what they are turning you into.
