Worship is more than just singing in a group setting. We often associate singing and songs with worship and that this is the only way that we can worship God, but it’s not. Worship is so much more than a song that we sing. If we say that worship is just a song, then we are limiting the ways that we can praise and connect with God.
Imagine that you and God could communicate using a phone. Saying that singing is the only way to worship God is like only using text messaging on a 1x connection to communicate with God. You are severely limiting the way that you can communicate with God if the only way you worship God is singing in a group setting.
There are 3 main categories in which we can worship God that can take on different forms. These three categories are inward, outward, and corporate.
Inward worship is worshiping God with your mind. This, I believe, is one of the hardest for us in a digital world today. This worship means getting away from the busyness of life and hustle and bustle that we often get trapped in. This collection of worship includes things such as prayer, Bible study, fasting, journaling and meditation. This category forces us to slow down and listen to God.
Outward worship is worshiping God with your body and your actions. This is a way to include and praise God and His creations. This category of worship includes things such as service to others, simplicity, sacrifice (of things that may be hindering us or to give to those less fortunate), and solitude. These are ways that we can see God in all of His creation. It is a way we see other people as God’s creatures and we are willing to serve them.
Corporate worship is the public display of an inward relationship with God. This is the way that we come together as the body of Christ and worship Him. Corporate worship includes things such as group singing, confession, seeking Biblical leadership, and celebration for what God has done.
All of these categories are necessary in worshiping God. So this week try incorporating one or more of these ways of worshiping God into your normal routine and watch how your relationship with God will grow.
